Sustainability transition – goals, challenges, opportunities

Csaba Kőrösi, the Strategic Director of the Blue Planet Foundation, gave an extraordinary lecture for the students of the Master’s program in Water Policy and Diplomacy and Political Science of the Ludovika University of Public Service and interested guests.

He stressed that in order to protect global public goods, it is essential to strengthen cooperation within, between and across countries, in addition to building public trust, integrating human, social, financial, environmental and built capital, measuring outcomes in a complex way and measuring economic development. The second half of the presentation focused on the UN Sustainable Development Goal 6 on sustainable water management and basic sanitation. In this context, he presented the outcomes of the UN Conference on Water held under his presidency from 22 to 24 March 2023, highlighting the nine cornerstones that are of key importance to prevent and address the increasing frequency and scale of water crises that are likely to occur in the future. These cornerstones are the linking of water and climate policies, the development of global water indicators, the development of early warning systems, the real decoupling of food and energy sustainability, the development of a new water economics, the development of education, the conclusion of transboundary agreements and a new UN institutional framework for water.
The discussion that followed the presentation was moderated by János Zlinszky and Zsófia Tomaj, two lecturers of the Water Policy and Diplomacy course.
